A Number of Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Strikes A Delta Airlines Flight into Sydney, Australia

Multiple passengers and crew have been injured following a Delta aircraft from Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by significant turbulence this past Friday.

The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson told. A number of the onboard staff sustained injuries.

Emergency medical services stated they evaluated a total of five people, and transferred three of them to the hospital with minor injuries that such as pain in the back and headaches. Those affected spanned from their 30s up to the 70s.

This marks the most recent case of aircraft encountering turbulence, with experts indicating that global warming is a key driver.

The aircraft was carrying 245 people and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson noted, stating that the plane arrived "safely" at Sydney Airport at 6:48 a.m. local time on the day in question.

Paramedics indicated they were alerted just three minutes prior to the plane landed, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

Why plane turbulence is growing more frequent - and potentially more dangerous.

Last year, twenty-five passengers and crew sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines flight, travelling from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "considerable" turbulence just 120 minutes into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

Recently, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines jet endured a frightening five seconds period of extreme instability. An individual passed away and dozens were injured, as those without seatbelts rose out of their seats and fell back down.

Bumpy air is a common occurrence while flying, and while occurrences of rough conditions appear to be increasing, they are statistically infrequent.

Estimates show that there are an estimated five thousand cases of significant in-flight disturbance annually, out of a sum of in excess of 35 million flights that now take off worldwide.

Intense turbulence is described as when the vertical motions of a jet experiencing disturbed air exert greater than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - enough to propel you from your seat if you did not have on a safety belt.

As global warming modifies the conditions in the sky, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become bumpier: warming trends and altered air currents in the higher altitudes are likely to boost the occurrence and strength of significant turbulence.
