One two-month journey through the Land Down Under has been cancelled in the wake of the death of an older lady who was stranded by the ship on a remote island.

The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the party for a rest. The liner sailed away leaving her and went back several hours later after the personnel became aware the passenger was missing.

A major rescue mission discovered her body the following day.

Authorities are examining the incident, in coordination with investigators and the state coroner.

Head of the cruise operator said that travelers and crew on the vessel were told that the rest of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and previous mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that travelers would be issued a full refund, and said the organization was working "to organize the travel back of the travelers via specially arranged planes".
