Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture at Spectators

The National Football League has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

He further clarified that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in early 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the penalty easily payable for the wealthy owner.

Offseason Issues and Media Attention

This event follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a streaming series that explored his role in developing the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to maintain professional conduct among all team officials, regardless of their status or wealth.
