Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
