The megacity Rises to Toxic Haze Post Diwali

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Readings

Various sections of the city showed an air quality index over 500, which translates to ten times the safe limit recommended by the global health authority.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable levels.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that blankets the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

Yet recently, the recently formed city leadership approached the supreme court to request a relaxation of the ban.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Court Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the festival.

Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several recording stations throughout the capital recorded pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe measurements seen during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also initiated a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing declining air quality in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the city have remained as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

During celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak records ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Multiple Contamination Factors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a mix of different contributors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

In these regions, farmers regularly ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as colder air descends.

Medical and Financial Consequences

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities per year in Delhi.
