The Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Position.

At first glance, this album might appear closer to a difficult scholarly quiz rather than the latest popular music record from an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Broken into four separate sections and sung in thirteen languages, we have a head-spinning symphonic album that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, often through the lens of various female saints. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness elsewhere—is shot skyward here, carried by the lush sound of a major orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure audacity alone makes the efforts of other artists look quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That Lux manages to avoid dry academic chin-stroking is almost miraculous, and full credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first album to alchemize the past and modern styles, the ambitions are far greater here, and the balancing act more precarious. What truly elevates her fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, is a core spirit of fun. Much like the iconic Björk during her height, you find a wondrous quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she's tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless want to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That exuberant spirit shines clearly on a stunning piano-led song about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle and a comment before a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds in with comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic track featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that the listener rarely exactly know—nor want to know—where you is going next."

Nearly each song ends at a totally distinct point than how it began. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing in electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing her previous trap-infused style starts off moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, before fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir arrive to soften the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Between Art and Pop

A key achievement of Lux involves navigating the line of radical experimentation and broad appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has become her first release to break into the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in English builds on a refrain that feels to gather more and more infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. That feat gets repeated on another expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it shares the cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep source of hidden gems that requires time to fully mine but never seem like a chore. Where some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on scraps, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the characters around the table, perhaps tipsy on sacred drink, flit between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
